THE JAZZ DISTRICT

Charlie Parker Memorial
This sculpture memorializes legendary jazz artist Charlie “Bird” Parker. He was a major part of the Kansas City jazz scene and culture. It is located in the middle of a plaza, also named after Parker, in the historic Jazz District and just west of the American Jazz Museum at 18th and Vine Streets.

The Neon Signs
Most of us are familiar with the welcoming neon sign which towers above the Historic 18th & Vine Jazz District. There are a handful of neon signs along 18th street, but imagine a time during the Jazz Age when the entire neighborhood was illuminated with glowing signs advertising shops, restaurants, and clubs.

The American Jazz Museum
Located in the 18th & Vine Historic Jazz District in Kansas City, this is the place where jazz masters such as Charlie Parker, Count Basie, Big Joe Turner, and hundreds of others defined the sounds of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s
The sights and sounds of a uniquely American art form come alive at the American Jazz Museum. The Museum includes interactive exhibits and educational programs as well as the Blue Room, a working jazz club, and the Gem Theater, a modern 500-seat performing arts center.

The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum
Founded in 1990, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is an iconic establishment that pays tribute to heroes of the past—and serves as a beacon of hope for change in the future.
The museum, which is based in the heart of the 18th & Vine Historic Jazz District, uses baseball to tell the story of racial inequality, of injustice not only in the Jim Crow South but throughout the United States. It also tells the story of the African American men who fought against these forces by playing the game that they loved well before they were viewed as equals.
